Kelly Bishop, 80, passed away peacefully at her home, Sunday, November 21, with her husband, Robert, at her side.
Kelly was born in Lubbock, Texas, March 11, 1941. She was raised in Illinois and graduated first in her class from Manteno High School. She attended the University of Illinois and graduated cum laude from Juniata College with a degree in Music Education. She married Veterinarian, Dr. Robert Bishop in 1962, and moved to the Bishop family farm in Harding, Pa, in 1966. They had 2 children, Danie and Devon, both of whom tragically died within 2 months of each other in 2010.
Kelly taught at the Wyoming Area Elementary School for 5 years, and taught voice and piano for over 50 years. She was heralded as being one of the area’s finest mezzo-sopranos,
singing with the Robert Dale Chorale and the Northeastern Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1981, she, Robert, and her brother, the late T Doyle Leverett, founded the Music Box Dinner Playhouse in Swoyersville. The Playhouse was the first successful dinner theatre in this area and remains the 2nd oldest community theatre in NE PA. Dr. Robert and Kelly Bishop have been recognized for their extraordinary contributions to the arts of Pennsylvania. Kelly was general manager and music director for several years and performed several memorable roles on stage. She also performed professionally in Summer Stock companies in Indiana, Virginia, and Washington D. C.
Kelly was also very active at the Harding Church of Christ where she formed a charitable organization known as “Common Cents”, dedicated to feeding the hungry in Wyoming Valley. She and her church raised over $20,000 donated to the St. Francis De Sales’ Soup Kitchen. She taught Sunday School for several years and was active with the Cub Scouts. For several years, Kelly was President of the Women’s’ Auxiliary of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Association.
She was preceded in death by her two Children and her brother, T. Doyle Leverett who passed in 2017.
Kelly is survived by her husband, Robert, her brother Hubbert Leverett and his wife, Patricia, her daughter-in-law, Theresa Bishop, brother-in-law, John McDermott, and 3 nieces.
In lieu of flowers, the Bishop family would greatly appreciate donations to the Music Box Dinner Playhouse, the Harding Church of Christ, and the Sacred Heart Hospice.
Kelly will be sadly missed by the hundreds of family members, friends, area performers and audiences who were so deeply affected by her talent, generosity, and love.
A Service will be held on Saturday November 27th, 2021 at 1p.m. at the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home Inc., at 509 Wyoming Avenue in West Pittston with Dr. Bob Shaw, Minister Officiating.  Friends may call on Friday at the Funeral Home from 5p.m. until 8p.m.  Interment will be private and held at the Convenience of the family.
